Project Description

What does a 4,000-seat arena give back to the city when the lights go out and the crowd leaves?
An international-scale multi-purpose arena is actively used for only 50 days a year. For the remaining 310 days, it risks becoming a closed object disconnected from everyday urban life. UNFOLDED GROUND proposes an alternative approach—an architecture designed not for 12% of the year, but for the remaining 88%.

4,000명의 환호가 멈추고, 조명이 꺼지고, 관객이 떠난 다음날 아침. 이 건물은 도시에게 무엇을 주는가?
국제규모 다목적체육관이 실제로 사용되는 날은 연간 50일에 불과합니다. 나머지 310일 동안, 건축은 도시에 등을 돌린 닫힌 상자가 됩니다. 본 계획은 12%의 시간이 아니라 88%의 시간을 위한 365일 숨쉬는 땅의 건축을 하고자 합니다.

Starting from an interpretation of annual programs and temporal cycles, the proposal transforms architecture into landscape. The arena is embedded beneath the ground while a continuous public park unfolds above, reconnecting Achasan Mountain and the Han River through a civic landscape open 365 days a year.
The project reimagines Gwangjang-dong as a place where extraordinary events and everyday life coexist within a single terrain, embracing both the intensity of global gatherings and the rhythms of daily urban life.

본 설계의 출발점은 형태가 아니라 시간입니다. 저희는 먼저 1년의 사용 주기를 해석하고, 거기서 도출된 비대칭의 시간 구조 — 50일의 집중과 310일의 일상 — 를 공간의 수직 구조로 해석하였습니다.
광장동의 열린 대지에서 출발한 본 계획은, 거대한 체육관 매스를 땅 아래로 가라앉히고 그 위에 공원을 펼쳐 건축을 하나의 지형으로 전환합니다. 아차산과 한강을 연결하는 공공 지형은 365일 시민에게 열려 있으며, 산책과 휴식, 문화와 커뮤니티 활동이 공존하는 새로운 도시 풍경을 제안합니다.
바람자락은 형태보다 시간을, 건물보다 땅을 먼저 생각한 건축입니다. 같은 한 장의 땅이 펼쳐지고 또 감싸며, 두 가지 시간을 모두 품어냅니다.
