How chairs can bring a life in a historical site, Battery Park, which regarded as a peaceful place?
Chair should not be an ordinary figure for the public, so the concept of design was inspired by the idea that new life continues after flowers are in full of blossom. Like seeds, one evolves continuously with its originality. The chair generated from recycled papers (Cardboard or Corrugated box paper) and returns to the public. Each chair consists of 25 unique DNA. Each chair can be displayed not only as a single chair, but also as a cohesive package with its identity. Chairs facilitate diverse activities for users from elderly people to children. People can combine chairs in infinite possible ways, and undulated chairs become a part of the landscape in Battery Park.
Upper unit can be combined with downside unit. One package provides a single chair and double chair; it can be connected with other units, too. The upper unit not only can be combined with its stand, but also stand on its own. Users can use this upper unit as a table.
In terms of manufacturing, each unit can be simply fabricated in a very easy process. Originated from the idea of folding paper, one unit can be completed in few hours. Moreover, It is very easy to handle to move or stack because chair made of light materials such as recycled papers and fabric.
In ordinary time, chairs function as a chair itself. Randomly scattered chairs like seeds diversify people’s activity not only human scale but also urban scale. In human scale, all different ages of people can meet serendipitously and come together without any barrier because chair has no certain orientation to use. In urban scale, people meet this symbolic furniture landscape of the Battery Park and United States during landing down to the JFK airport. Different colors and different unit combinations can be deployed. As a result, chairs randomly be scattered by visitors’ activities, it keeps changing Battery Park. On the other hand, all chairs could be merged together and converted to an urban sculpture, when events held. Chairs create space for specific events with the rhythm of changes; time and place. Specific unit combination can be defined to promote sponsor’s advertisement like national holiday, Independence day in the United States. At night, lightscape created by “Seeds of Peace” gives a new life in Battery Park (Refer the process book optionally attached). In essence, chairs function as an artifact during daytime as well as lighting fixture at night.
Hope to create endlessly changing place with different emotions like flowers blossom.
