Project Description

The Cross House project began after receiving a request to build a house for her parents in a place called Najin Village, somewhat far from downtown Yeosu. The first feeling our team had when we visited this site was the warm feeling of being surrounded by a river, not the sea. The reason we realized this after returning from the field researching data was that the name Najin meant a port as beautiful as silk. It is said that the original meaning was a low stream where boats could not embark when the water receded due to the low depth of the sea. We learned that it is made up of fine mud flats without sand or gravel, and is home to a variety of creatures and a place where migratory birds stay. In addition to the fact that it is such a beautiful place, we carefully approached what kind of building we should provide for the client’s parents (70s) who have lived in this place their entire lives.

Unfortunately, the provided two parcels did not have a direct view of the sea from the ground floor level. Her parents said that in order to see the sea in the small house their parents lived in previously, they had to go up to the roof of the single-story building. We started with design ideas given that context.

For the sons and daughters who visit every holiday from other provinces, the main mass was placed on the second floor to provide parking for at least three cars while also providing a view toward the sea, giving it a floating shape. On the second floor, where most of the rooms and living rooms are located, the layout is linear so that their parents can see the sea from anywhere. (Excerpt)
